TPG Marine [Enterprises] – MVBS Jeffersonville [operation] has renamed its latest towboat, the mv. Mombo, after owner Don Miller’s mother, the late Cindi Miller.

Built in 2012 by Marine Inland Fabricators, Panama City, Fla., the 660 hp vessel was originally named the mv. Miss Darlene. The towboat has two John Deere 6081A diesel engines and Twin Disc MB5091DC gears along with Kubota D1703 generators. Capt. Spencer Jones is the primary pilot for mv. Mombo.

Miller’s mother, whom he affectionately called “Mombo,” a combination of Rambo and Mom, raised him and his brother as a single parent after his father died when Miller was a teenager.

“During this time, Don and his brother, Jeff, had many friends come and hang out at their house and often stay with them for extended periods of time,” said Charles Latham, general manager of [MVBS Jeffersonville]. “The friends began calling Cindi ‘Mombo’ as she was like a mother to all the boys that came and spent time in their home. The name stuck from that point forward.”

Cindi Miller was well known in Coos Bay, Ore., where she served multiple terms as a city councilor and paved the way for business leaders in the area – especially women.

“She was a true pioneer for women and people in general,” said Latham. “She was extremely straightforward and fun-loving at the same time. She was genuinely a great soul.”

Latham said one of Cindi Miller’s passions was to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers. “That is where I got the idea for the theme for the mv. Mombo,” added Latham. “Its pilothouse resembles a football helmet. With the help of some buddies that work at a local sign company, I came up with the signage and color scheme of the towboat so that it resembled that of a Pittsburgh Steeler’s helmet.”

Much like his Mother, Don Miller admires the Steelers and felt the tribute to his mother was very fitting. “We take more pride here at MVBS Jeffersonville with the mv. Mombo than any other piece of equipment we manage just because of what it represents for these two very special people,” said Latham.
