Funding Waterways Infrastructure

I wonder how many members of Congress pay cash for their homes and cars. We all make purchases, believing incomes will grow and our financed investment will pay dividends. The idea that there should be no investment in the U.S. Waterways infrastructure without cutting spending in some other completely unrelated category is — well — it’s ridiculous. Until we call Congress on the carpet for these nutty, arbitrary tradeoffs, we continue to risk falling behind the growing world economies in China and India — and the American worker will continue to see his “real” income shrink. The Waterways will pay for themselves in short order, but fixes have to happen now. Do we really think that people who have access to credit will starve their families to fund fixing the roof rather than taking out a small loan to do the job?
